Petitgrain Essential Oil

Botanical name: Citrus Aurantium
Botanical family: Rutaceae

Part of plant used: Leaves and stems

Origin: Petitgrain essential oil is produced from the Orange tree, the bitter orange is the preferred choice. These trees originate from Paraguay, France and Italy.

Description: Floral, citrusy fragrance

History: Petitgrain comes from the name 'small grains' due to the oil originally being distilled from the small fruits of the Orange as well as the Lemon and Mandarin trees. This is a popular oil used in the perfume industry.

Properties and Indications:

  • Highly antiseptic due to it's abundance of terpenes
  • Has calming qualities - mildly sedative and relaxing
  • Digestive - good for stomach upsets
  • Soothing to the skin - antiseptic qualities can help with acne

Personality:

  • Calming and refreshing to the mind
  • Can help with depression

Contra-indications:

  • Do not expose yourself to the sun after using Petitgrain as it can be photosensitive
