Colds are virus-caused illnesses that affect the respiratory system, nasal passages and throat and they are not effectively treated with antibiotics. Naturopathic physicians regard the common cold as the body's attempt to cleanse impurities especially since colds no longer limit their appearance to a specific season. The source of those impurities can range from pollution to improper diet. And the effects can be magnified by something we all experience to one degree or another... stress. Unfortunately the stress levels that each of us experiences daily seems to be growing in volume.

Catarrh - Another name for Congestion

Aromatherapy is used for different conditions, one of which is Catarrh. Catarrh is inflammation of the nasal, sinus and upper respiratory passages.A more common term IS Congestion. Congestion may include formation of mucus but can be due to swelling and inflammation of the tissues lining the nasal and sinuses.

The simplest way to help relieve is to add a drop or two of known essential oils to relieve congestion to a cotton ball or tissue and breathe in.

For some using a nasal inhaler with a few drops added is more discreet especially, if you have to go out in public and want to have something to use that is quick and easy. You can make a personal inhaler by using an empty & clean chapstick container. Place the cotton inside the container and put the lid on. Use when needed.

Dry Inhalation - If you have to be at work while your are experiencing the symptoms of a cold, hold your handkerchief about three inches from your face, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. On a handkerchief place:
3 drops eucalyptus essential oil
2 drops clary sage essential oil and
2 drops sweet orange essential oil

Easy Stuffy nose Inhaler Blend - Blend these together and apply to the cotton used in any Personal nasal inhaler. Replenish as needed. Simply place the inhaler near your nostrils one at a time and inhale slowly 2-3 times. Repeat as needed.
2 drops Peppermint
2 drops Eucalyptus globulus
2 drops Rosemary

Aromatherapy is often used to help relieve congestion due to rhinitis, sinusitis, the common cold, influenza, hay fever just to name a few. Some prefer to do a steam treatment by filling a bowl with hot water and draping a towel over the bowl. Add a few drops of essential oil and inhale for several minutes. Eucalyptus is very well known to help with congestion. But other oils may help include Cajuput, Cedarwood , Frankincense, Ginger, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Peppermint, Pine, Ravensara, Rosemary, Tea Tree and Thyme.

You can use this blend in any diffuser.
20 drops Eucalyptus radiata and
20 drops Lavender.

In A Personal inhaler put:
2 drops Rosemary and
1 drop Peppermint.
Inhale as needed.

A Chest Rub for Catarrh:
2 ounces carrier oil
20 drops Eucalyptus
5 drops Basil
5 drops Peppermint
5 drops Cedarwood
Blend essential oils then add the carrier oil. Rub on the upper chest, neck and on your back (if you have help). After you have rubbed these areas, cup your hands over your nose and mouth and inhale the remnants of the essential oils left on your hands for a few breaths. Use this 2-3 times daily as needed.

Cleansing

For the Sick, Cleansing Room Spray - Blend the essential oils with the emulsifier then add this mixture to the linen spray. Shake well. Spray several sprays around the room. Can also be sprayed on surfaces such as door knobs and faucet handles, be sure to wipe dry after a few minutes. This blend can also be used in any diffuser by omitting the emulsifier and linen spray. Just blend the essential oils and use in any diffuser. In a sick room a diffuser may be the best choice. Place a few drops of Thieves essential Oil into the diffuser of your choice. Thieves Blend has become one of the most requested blends during the cold season. During the Black Plague in year 1413 in Europe, four thieves were charged for robbing the dying victims and the dead. When given leniency of their charges, the thieves revealed the recipe that protected them from infection. That recipe is now the Thieves Blend. True story! Out of curiosity, I first tried it on my hands, ears, and temples and in my aromatherapy diffuser just to see if it can keep the flu I seem to get annually at bay. Surprisingly, it did. Next I used it my home child care facility to see if it helped the children….well …Now those children, s parents use it in their home. The same with Eucalyptus Globulus and other Natural Oils. The addition of essential oils has defiantly improved my health and my environment, we were healthy throughout the winter! You can order a 15 ml. bottle of Natural “Thieves” essential oil by Young Living or a larger & more cost effective Quantity of Natural Thieves essential Oil here. SOOTHING BATH RECIPES

Combining essential oils with baths allow essential oils a double rout into the body, through breathing in steam diffusion and by absorption through the skin. When warmed by bathwater the pours in our skin open, therefore allowing a greater saturation of essential oils which enter our bloodstream in a fast manner releasing their therapeutic effects. Carrier oils used like V-6 or olive oil to dilute essential oils also provide the benefit of softening, moisturizing, and conditioning your skin. If you have a cold, bathing can encourage your body to sweat the toxins out as well as ease emotional tension and sore muscles. The medicinal effects of your bath depend upon the essential oils you have chosen. A blend of essential oils can often intensify healing properties of individual oils. Make sure to use the specific essential oils “botanical latin name” to guarantee optimal healing effects. As always, we make every effort to provide accurate and up-to-date information that is intended to compliment, not replace the advise of your Health care provider physician. Before undertaking the advise contained in this website or elsewhere you should consult with a health care professional, who can best assess 2.Listed below are several essential oils, their beneficial factors and Several Essential Oil Bath Recipies. *Bathe for no longer than 20 minutes, staying in the tub longer dries out the skin. *Never take a bath on a full stomach, it irritates the digestive system. *Use a bath pillow or rolled hand towel to support your head, it will allow you to relax more easily. *Essential oils are highly concentrated, always dilute them before using. *Add essential oils to the bathwater just before you get in, so you may experience their complete potential benefits. * Breathe in through your nose, absorbing the energy from the oils and exhale through the mouth releasing all of the impurities. *Massage your skin with gentle circular motions to bring blood to the surface, tone muscles and energize the body.

PHYSICAL AILMENTS - ASTHMA & BRONCHITIS

Having asthma and bronchitis can be a stressful affliction. I grew up with this condition and now my 18 month grandson whom I love dearly was diagnosed with Asthma. When your bronchi and muscles surrounding them become narrowed, breathing becomes difficult. Many things can cause or trigger an asthma reaction. Air born allergens, polin, animals, food allergies, chocolate, chemical sensitivities, exercise and even hearing upsetting news.

Coughing and wheezing result as you attempt desperately to breathe. Asthma is or can be a serious medical condition and should never be taken lightly. Please follow your doctors instructions. Bronchitis is inflammation of the bronchi. Again this can be caused by many of the same triggers for asthma. Thick mucus accumulates as the bronchial walls are irritated and inflamed. It can be difficult to expel this mucus. Often times bronchitis will develop at the end of a cold or other upper respiratory infection. In both cases, you should always consult your physician before implementing aromatherapy.

Trying to avoid offending allergens of course will greatly reduce any attacks. In the case of bronchitis, getting plenty of rest is also important. Aromatherapy can help to open airways and make breathing easier. Essential oils help to clear congestion, reduce inflammation and thin excess mucus so coughing is more productive. Essential oils helpful with asthma include Clary sage, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Peppermint, Myrrh, Pine, Rose, Rosemary, and Tea tree. Essential oils helpful with bronchitis include Cedarwood, Cypress, Elemi, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Peppermint, Myrrh, Orange, Pine, Rosemary, Sandalwood and Tea tree. Helpful to relieve and soothe coughs include Basil, Black pepper, Cedarwood, Clary sage, Elemi, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Lavender, Marjoram, Myrrh, Pine, Rose, Rosemary, Tea tree and Thyme. When making blends for any health concern - remember the best is to try one or two oils to start with. Try never to blend more than 5-6 oils together at one time. Below in the Recipe section is a recipe to try for asthma and bronchitis relief. We also recommend you continue to study and read about aromatherapy and essential oils. Please remember to purchase or borrow books on Aromatherapy from your friends or library.

The best defense is to be prepared both physically and mentally.

We all know, The better physical condition we are in, the better chance our body has to fight off illness. Its just as important to be in a good mental health condition, but have you been doing enough to maintain a healthy emotional balance? *To know what a healthy mental state is, you must first **recognize within yourself what that actually means.

Western culture lost its focus on the interconnectedness between the body, the mind or spirit, and how each has the power to affect the other. One example we all are familiar with is stress.

Stress comes in many forms and affects people of all ages and all walks of life. Stress is related to both external and internal factors.

External factors, also known as our physical environment, include your job, relationships with others, your home, all situations, challenges, difficulties, and expectations you're confronted with on a daily basis. Internal factors determine your body's ability to respond to, and deal with, the external stress.

Internal factors that influence your ability to handle stress are your nutritional status, overall health and fitness levels, emotional well-being, and the amount of sleep and rest you get.

Small Children

What to do concerning small children, babies, pregnant women and the elderly?

As for the use of essential oils you should follow the guidelines for the youngest member of the house hold. And in general it is suggested that only half the amount of essential oils should be used for babies, children (under two), pregnant and the elderly that are used for an average adult when diffusing or in massage. Only if the older members of the house are in their own confined rooms should normal adult suggested amounts be used. Some essential oils (namely Eucalyptus globulus and Peppermint ) can potentially cause airway constriction in small children and babies. These two oils in particular should never be applied to the skin or chest/neck area, even when diluted, to those under two years of age. AND use lesser amounts should be used when diffused too in the rooms they are in.

A special note for pregnant women:Flu in anyone can be very serious but influenza in a pregnant women can be even more dangerous and life threatening to not only the mother but also the baby. If you become ill see your doctor. AND only after they have given you the okay to use essential oils for your illness whether it is the flu or the cold should you use them. Reports by the CDC say that pregnant women are at more risk especially with the H1N1 virus of having complications. So seek medical attention if you are pregnant and have the flu or a cold.

In Review: Be prepared. Wash your hands frequently, Eat good meals with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, eat your lean proteins too. Exercise and get plenty of rest. When you are feeling under the weather stay at home and away from others ... if you can. Diffuse essential oils, especially after you have been out in public or confined where another is not feeling well. Remember too that although essential oils are great at many things, they are not a ‘cure all’ and you must seek medical attention as needed.

Wpe do hope you and your family will use essential oils now to build your immune systems and to ward off any viral or bacterial infections. Use them safely and responsibly to stay healthy and happy throughout the next several months and please Take care!
